Wireless Backhaul Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint

The constant increase of Internet bandwidth demand has pushed the need to build a stable and well-constructed network backhaul infrastructure.

While the wired optical fiber network is proven to be the preferred highspeed broadband infrastructure medium due to its stability and performance, constructing fiber-optic networks has its challenges especially across large terrain and long distances.

Major Challenges in Wired Networks

There are some real challenges in building fiber-optic networks especially long distances outdoor networks.

  • High cost of investments

  • Time-consuming deployment

  • Terrain challenges

  • Right-of-way permission by authority required

Cheaper and Faster Alternatives using Wireless Point-to-Point

To overcome the high investment cost and deployment time, wireless backhaul has become increasingly popular and a quicker and cheaper alternative. Today, the Wireless Point-to-Point backhaul technology already able to achieve fiber-fast speed connectivity at a fraction of fiber cost thus it a much better choice amongst network operators.

What is Wireless Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint

Wireless point-to-point/Multipoint (PTP/PTMP) or some calls it wireless bridge allows two or more networks to be connected together physically using wireless technology. It cost much cheaper and faster to set-up compare with fiber optics which requires tearing open the ground to lay the fiber. Typical wireless PTP applications include:

  • Connecting two locations/building together wirelessly using radio frequency

  • Frequency spectrum can run on license or unlicensed band

  • The unlicensed band spectrum runs on:

    • 2.400GHz – 2.484GHz

    • 5.725GHz – 5.850GHz

  • Requires line-of-sight (LOS) between the two locations

  • Non-line-of-sight can be achieved in shorter distances

  • Installations can be completed within days

  • Quicker and cost-effective alternative for fiber replacement

Key Features of Wireless Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint
  • Simple and easy installation

  • High availability, up to 99.99%

  • High capacity throughput, up to 1.7GBps

  • The distance can reach up to 100Km (LOS)
